The Faberge family originated in France in the 17th century with the original surname Favri. Gustav Faberge was born in 1814 and moved to St. Petersburg, Russia at the age of 16 to become a goldsmith. In 1842, Gustav Faberge opened the jewelry store Fabergé in a basement on Bolshaya Morskaya Street in St. Petersburg, and the brand's emphasis was on distinctly French style and luxury.

Heir to the family business, Peter Carl Faberge, was involved in jewelry design and making at a very young age, studying abroad in Germany, Italy, France, England and more. In 1882, Fabergé participated in the PanRussian Exhibition in Moscow. One of the replicas of the Scythian Treasure series of gold bracelets was appreciated by the Russian Tsar, and Peter Carl Faberge became the royal goldsmith and jeweler. In 1885, Peter Carl Faberge was appointed to make an imperial Easter egg for Empress Maria Feodorovna. This work was unveiled at the Queen's coronation in 1896 and became Fabergé's most classic jewelry work in the future.
