As the name suggests, Dodane 1857 was founded in 1857. Alphonse Dodane and his father-in-law François-Xavier Joubert decided to establish a watch factory on the Swiss border. This has nothing to do with Switzerland and watchmaking. This is because the nearby river provides hydraulic power to its machinery. A few years later, they moved to the Haut-Dubs region in eastern France to take advantage of better rail transport. Still, they developed to a smaller extent until World War I.

During World War I, aircraft were first used to drop bombs on the battlefield. Unfortunately, aiming techniques were not very good at the time. At this time Dodan developed a counter-clock specifically for use in bomb aiming devices.
